The Yankees have activated Carlos Rodón off the injured list, and he’s set to start today’s game against the Brewers. In a related move, Kervin Castro was sent to Triple-A.
Rodón had elbow surgery last October to remove loose bodies and began this season on the injured list while he recovered. He made his first rehab start in late April and performed well enough to join the Yankees’ rotation. In his last outing with the Triple-A team, he pitched 6 1/3 innings, building his strength back up. Now, he slots into a middle rotation spot behind Max Fried and Cam Schlittler.
The 2025 season was a standout for Rodón. He posted a 3.09 ERA over 195 1/3 innings and struck out 203 batters. Notably, he increased his groundball rate and reduced the number of home runs he allowed. His impressive performance brought his value to 3.2 fWAR, re-establishing his reputation after struggles in previous years.
Currently, the Yankees’ pitching has been exceptional, even without Rodón and Gerrit Cole. The team leads the majors with a 3.01 ERA and 5.2 fWAR. Fried and Schlittler have been especially strong, with Schlittler boasting a 1.35 ERA. Additionally, Will Warren has improved his strikeout and walk rates, while Ryan Weathers has contributed effectively as a reliever. Rodón’s return is expected to bolster this already strong rotation.
Luis Gil, a former Rookie of the Year, was sent back to Triple-A after facing challenges in his four starts. He’s currently sidelined due to shoulder inflammation. For now, Paul Blackburn will handle long relief duties, providing consistency while the rotation adjusts. Cole will need more rehab starts before he returns, which could result in another rotation shuffle then.
In the meantime, Castro’s recent outing marked his first major league appearance since 2022. He pitched two innings, allowing one earned run, and is now back at Triple-A. His journey has been tough, missing significant time due to surgeries but he remains ready for future opportunities.
As the season unfolds, the Yankees are fortunate to have a strong rotation and depth in pitching options, setting the stage for an exciting run.
