The River Rouge School District has teamed up with Forgotten Harvest since 2014 to fight hunger in the community. This collaboration is crucial for tackling food insecurity and making sure families have access to healthy meals.
Every Wednesday at 9 a.m., the school district hosts a food distribution program at Ann Visger Preparatory Academy, located at 11121 West Jefferson Avenue in River Rouge. Each week, they serve between 400 and 700 people, providing a variety of essential food items.
Forgotten Harvest, a nonprofit organization in Metro Detroit, works to reduce food waste by collecting surplus food from grocery stores, restaurants, and farms. They then redistribute that food to local food pantries and shelters. People who receive help from this program might find fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, canned goods, frozen meats, and bread. The selection can vary based on what is available and the season.
Additionally, on the first Wednesday of each month, the Humane Society joins the effort by supplying food and other necessities for pets, ensuring that pets are also cared for during tough times.
There are no eligibility requirements to receive food from the program, making it accessible to everyone in need. The initiative is funded through private donations, corporate sponsorships, grants, and fundraising events. Partnerships with other nonprofits and government programs also play a vital role in keeping this support going.
