When the federal government shutdown delayed CalFresh benefits in November, many in Yolo County faced increased food insecurity. To tackle this urgent issue, the Yolo Food Bank teamed up with Yolo County to launch Food First, a five-point emergency response plan aimed at helping CalFresh recipients and others in need.
Thanks to an overwhelming wave of community support, they exceeded their initial fundraising goal of $750,000, raising over $1 million. This money is being used to buy food for those affected by the benefit delays and ongoing food insecurity.
The Yolo County Board of Supervisors was quick to act, contributing $225,000 from one-time tobacco settlement funds directly to the Food Bank. This money went toward purchasing grocery gift cards for families relying on CalFresh, which were distributed through local nonprofit partners.
On November 7, the Yolo Community Foundation added to the momentum with a $25,000 donation, urging locals to pitch in for those struggling during this crisis. The Davis Food Co-Op also joined the effort, establishing a Food Access Relief Fund at their registers. “It’s a tough time right now,” said Laura Sanchez, their general manager. “Cooperatives must support our community.”
These contributions sparked even broader support from individuals and businesses, showing a community united against food scarcity. Beyond fundraising, Yolo Food Bank ramped up emergency food distribution events, increasing the amount of food available through its regular programs by 20% and supplying extra resources to local food pantries.
Karen Baker, the executive director of Yolo Food Bank, highlighted the profound impact of the campaign: “Food First didn’t just replace lost benefits; it replaced fear with food, anxiety with assurance, and uncertainty with community care.”
The importance of food banks, especially during crises, cannot be overstated. According to a recent report from Feeding America, food insecurity affects about 10.5% of households in the U.S., a testament to the need for ongoing support and community initiatives.
