YORK, S.C. – Food prices are rising, and more families are turning to food pantries for help. In York County, one school district is stepping up to support the local food bank as its shelves run low.
York School District 1 is working with PATH Food Bank to tackle food insecurity in the area. They recently organized a food drive, collecting nearly 6,000 canned goods in just two weeks to help families in need.
PATH, which serves around 225 families each month, offers a range of services including financial assistance and educational programs. Development director Arlene Richardson-Maier says they frequently receive calls from families needing food. “We try to get them as much as possible,” she explains.
The situation is concerning. According to Feeding America, nearly 20% of children in the U.S. face food insecurity. In some rural areas, that number can reach as high as 50%.
Long-time PATH client Wanda McSwain notes that many families struggle to access food. “Food is hard to come by for some families,” she says.
The school district’s initiative not only helps local families but also educates students on the importance of giving back. Janet Parker, a public information officer for the district, highlights how this experience fosters a sense of responsibility among students. “They may be helping a fellow classmate or family member in need. We want to nurture that excitement of giving back,” she says.
Richardson-Maier stresses the need for community support. “If the funding isn’t there, we can’t help. We rely on private donations,” she shares.
The partnership between the school district and PATH isn’t just a one-time effort. They plan to continue working together to extend their reach and support more families in need.
