Getting Started with OBS
To kick things off, you’ll need:
- A PC or laptop for your streaming software
- Streaming software like OBS Studio or Streamlabs
If you’re capturing gameplay from a console, a video capture card is also necessary.
After setting up your software, consider joining a service such as Streamlabs or StreamElements. These can help you set up animated alerts for new subscribers and more!
Game Capture Basics
Start by creating a “Scene” in OBS. This scene allows you to organize elements like alerts and webcam displays. Let’s create one now.
- Click the plus icon in the “Scenes” panel and name your scene “Gameplay.”
- In the “Sources” panel, add a source to capture your video:
- For capturing gameplay on the same PC, choose “Display Capture.”
- For gameplay from a console, select “Video Capture Device.”
Follow the prompts to connect your screen or device.
Setting Up Your Webcam
Adding a webcam can help you connect more with your audience. Here’s how to set it up:
- Add a new source and select your webcam from the list.
- Adjust the webcam’s position and size as needed.
- To add a stylish overlay, select “Image” in the Sources panel and find your overlay file.
Building Alerts
Alerts are crucial for engaging with viewers. Here’s a simplified way to set them up.
- Create a Streamlabs account and log in.
- Navigate to the “Alert Box” on the dashboard and add a variation for alerts.
- Enable the alert, upload files, and configure your desired look and sound.
For the Halo anniversary, upload the “Stream-Alert-R02” animation from the bundle. Adjust font settings to your liking, using a clean font like Bebas Neue.
Adding Alerts to Your Scene
After configuring alerts, it’s time to add them to OBS. Copy the alert widget URL from Streamlabs and:
- Add a new “Browser” source in the Sources panel.
- Paste the URL and set dimensions to 800 x 600 pixels.
- Position the alerts where they fit best.
Test the alerts through the Streamlabs site.
Setting Up a Lobby with Chat
To create a lobby scene with a chat feed:
- Start by adding your webcam as before.
- Go to the Streamlabs dashboard and set up the “Chat Box,” customizing it to your liking.

To add a stylish transition between scenes, use the Stinger option in the Scene Transitions panel in OBS. Upload your transition video from the Creator Bundle and set the transition timing for smooth scene changes.
