Even though it feels like just yesterday we were watching “Oppenheimer” claim awards and Billie Eilish’s emotional “Barbie” song, the Academy Awards are back!
Conan O’Brien is hosting for the first time, and the excitement is in the air in Los Angeles. Snacks are ready, and everyone is gearing up for a night of celebration.
Netflix’s musical “Emilia Pérez” leads with 13 nominations, while both “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” follow closely behind with 10 nominations each.
However, “Emilia Pérez” has faced challenges recently due to controversial comments made by star Karla Sofía Gascón. This has impacted the film’s chances, except perhaps for best supporting actress, where Zoe Saldaña is seen as a strong contender.
“The Brutalist,” directed by Brady Corbet, tells the story of Hungarian refugees in the U.S. after World War II. It recently won several awards at the BAFTAs, but had previously stirred up debate over its use of artificial intelligence in dialect work, which Corbet strongly defended.
In the case of “Wicked,” while it has a huge fan base, it struggles to convert that to award wins. Directed by Jon M. Chu, it’s nominated for best picture, with stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the running for individual awards. If Erivo wins, she could achieve EGOT status, but she faces tough competition from Demi Moore in the best actress category.
We’ll have to wait and see how it all unfolds. Best of luck to all the nominees!
Now let’s talk about the presenters and performers. The Oscars boast an incredible guest list: Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone, Halle Berry, and many more talented stars will be there.
Performers include Erivo and Grande, along with Doja Cat, Lisa from Blackpink, Queen Latifah, and Grammy-nominated artist Raye.
The ceremony starts at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT, with the red carpet pre-show kicking off a half hour earlier. You’ll be able to catch the event live on ABC and stream it on Hulu, so don’t miss it!
