Your Voice Matters: SGB Tackles Campus Concerns on New Rec Center and Food Safety at Pitt

Student Government Board (SGB) held its weekly meeting at Nordy’s Place this Tuesday, focusing on student concerns about campus gyms and dining options. They also announced an open position for a Disability Resource Liaison.

SGB President Marley Pinsky shared updates on the new Recreation and Wellness Center, which opens its doors on September 14. Pinsky acknowledged issues with early gym closures due to equipment changes. “We had to sell some of the old equipment to afford high-tech replacements, so we’re excited about the upgrades,” Pinsky said.

While the new center is under final construction, it will operate on reduced hours, from noon to 8 p.m., for the first two weeks.

During the open floor session, students raised troubling concerns about moldy cookies served in campus dining halls, echoing complaints from last September about pests and undercooked meals. Chief of Staff Evan Levasseur mentioned that SGB is set to discuss these matters with Pitt Eats next week. “Last year, many students reported issues with food safety. We’ll bring these concerns to the table again,” he stated.

Board member Siya Saraswat highlighted other issues, such as long lines and utensil shortages. “The dining staff usually work with us, so we hope for positive changes after our upcoming meeting,” Saraswat noted.

In addition to dining matters, Vice President Olivia Budike discussed the new Disability Resources Services liaison position. “It’s a great opportunity for anyone passionate about advocating for accessibility on campus,” she said.

On the financial side, several clubs presented funding requests. The Figure Skating Club sought over $10,000 for competitions, while the board approved a reduced amount of $4,578.10. Active Minds received the full $5,000 they requested for an event, as did Salsa Club, which requested $6,600 for on-campus activities. The Fann Club and Computer Science Club also got their funding requests approved in full.

These discussions reflect ongoing efforts to create a better campus environment, addressing both food safety and accessibility, while fostering student engagement in clubs and activities.
