YouTube TV has recently lost access to Disney’s popular channels, including ESPN and ABC. This blackout came quickly, just before a contract expired. Disney and YouTube TV couldn’t reach an agreement, mainly due to disagreements over price.

If the channels stay unavailable for a long time, YouTube TV will provide subscribers with a one-time $20 credit. Currently, a standard subscription costs about $82.99 per month. This blackout means that sports fans will miss out on major events, including NFL and NBA games.

Some users reported losing access to Disney programming even before the deadline. In addition to live channels, any recorded shows from these networks on DVR will also be unavailable.

Disney started warning viewers about the potential blackout on October 23. YouTube TV is the biggest internet-TV service in the U.S., boasting over 10 million subscribers. In contrast, Disney’s Hulu + Live TV has around 6 million subscribers after its merger with Fubo.

A YouTube spokesperson claimed that Disney used the threat of a blackout as leverage to raise prices. “This decision hurts our subscribers while helping Disney’s own services,” they said.

YouTube TV has suggested new tiered options for customers to maintain flexibility, but no consensus has been reached yet. Disney argues that YouTube TV wants a better deal than other distributors. As Disney points out, they successfully negotiated with services like Comcast and Hulu.

Interestingly, this kind of power struggle isn’t new. Disney recently had disputes with other companies like Charter and DirecTV. For instance, ESPN went dark on DirecTV for almost two weeks in 2024 before reaching a new deal.

This isn’t the first clash between Disney and Google. In the past, they had a blackout in December 2021 that lasted two days. Each negotiation cycle adds tension, showcasing the challenges in the evolving media landscape.
