Zach Wilson is returning to the AFC East in 2025, signed by the Miami Dolphins for one year at $6 million. This contract is fully guaranteed and could rise to $10 million depending on performance.
Wilson may step in as a backup for Tua Tagovailoa. Tagovailoa had a challenging season last year, suffering injuries that limited him to just 11 games. Wilson’s opportunity to get more playing time could increase if Tagovailoa faces more health issues this season.
Last year, Wilson didn’t see any regular-season action with the Denver Broncos, where he was behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham on the depth chart. Still, he impressed during the preseason by completing 28 of 44 passes for 397 yards and three touchdowns.
Before his time in Denver, Wilson was the second overall pick by the Jets in 2021. However, after a tough stint in New York, he was traded to the Broncos. The Broncos opted not to exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie deal, letting him hit free agency this offseason.
Former teammates believe Wilson’s year in Denver helped him grow. Tight end Adam Trautman noted that it relieved some pressure compared to playing in New York, allowing him to focus on his development. Trautman expressed confidence in Wilson’s growth as a quarterback, saying, “He came from the toughest media market to play in. Having a year of stress-free work, learning and being able to say, ‘How do I develop as a quarterback?’ I think it was awesome for him.”
Additionally, Broncos wide receiver David Sills praised Wilson’s talent, saying he possesses “all the attributes you want in a quarterback.” Sills believes that with time, Wilson has the potential to become one of the top quarterbacks in the league.
