Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet European leaders in London on Sunday. This comes after a tense discussion with US President Donald Trump that left many Western allies feeling uncertain about the situation in Ukraine.
King Charles has also agreed to meet Zelensky, which the Ukrainian leader shared ahead of the talks.
Zelensky arrived in Britain on Saturday, aiming to generate momentum for a peace deal that recently seemed within reach but suffered setbacks after Friday’s argument.
Earlier, Zelensky and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met at Downing Street. They signed an agreement to boost $2.8 billion in loans to Ukraine, with the first funds expected next week.
However, the upcoming summit, organized by Starmer, presents significant challenges. Leaders from various European nations will have to navigate difficult discussions.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of US support, saying, “We’ve been fighting for three years, and the people of Ukraine need to know America is on our side.” His comments reflect his urgent need for renewed backing from allies.
The recent conflict between Trump and Zelensky shocked many in Europe, especially since it followed a more positive tone set during recent discussions. The tension added pressure to the summit, which was initially intended to build on progress made previously.
Trump and JD Vance criticized Zelensky for being ungrateful for American aid, accusing him of risking global stability. This confrontation undermined the cooperative spirit that had started to form between the US and Ukraine.
Just one day before, Starmer had appeared to influence Trump’s perception of Zelensky, prompting a potentially fruitful dialogue. Now, that progress feels lost.
Starmer stated, “We are at a turning point… I will reaffirm my unwavering support for Ukraine and commit to providing training and aid.” He aims to strengthen security guarantees and European alliances while addressing Ukraine’s immediate needs.
The summit will focus on three key goals: meeting Ukraine’s short-term demands, establishing a lasting peace agreement, and solidifying security guarantees.
As European leaders rushed to show their support for Zelensky recently, Starmer maintained silence, likely due to updates he received after the Trump-Zelensky dispute. His office confirmed that he remains committed to Ukraine and is aiming for a sustainable peace based on respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Starmer’s role as a mediator between Europe and the White House is pivotal, even in challenging times. He hopes to see progress during the summit, though a sense of urgency looms large over the discussions ahead.
Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak expressed skepticism about any immediate improvements coming from the meetings in London, highlighting the complex situation that remains.
