Zelenskyy Appoints New Chief of General Staff to Boost Ukraine’s Combat Readiness and Strengthen Defense

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Andrii Hnatov as the new chief of the general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces. This move comes as Ukraine works to restructure its military amid ongoing conflicts in the Kursk region with Russia and increasing pressure in Donetsk.

Hnatov takes over from Anatoliy Barhylevych, who held the position since February 2024. The announcement was made via the general staff’s Telegram channel. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov highlighted the significance of these changes, stating, “We are systematically transforming the Armed Forces of Ukraine to enhance their combat effectiveness.”

Barhylevych will now transition to serve as the general inspector for Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, where he will oversee military standards and enforce discipline within the ranks. Oleksandr Syrskyi continues as the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces.

Since the full-scale invasion by Russia in 2022, Zelenskyy has frequently reshuffled military and government personnel, aiming to respond more effectively to the challenges faced by Ukraine.

The timing of these appointments is critical. Fighting is intensifying in the Kursk region, where Ukraine reported eight clashes over the weekend. Just last year, Ukrainian forces surprised Russia by launching a bold offensive, regaining around 1,300 square kilometers of territory. However, recent developments indicate a shift in momentum, with Russia claiming control of Sudzha, once the largest town held by Ukraine in the Kursk region.
