Zoe Saldaña recently spoke about her film, Emilia Pérez, and addressed concerns from the Mexican community regarding its portrayal of Mexico. She expressed her sincere apologies for any hurt feelings caused by the film.
In an interview after winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Saldaña responded to a reporter who mentioned that many Mexicans found the film offensive. She said, “I’m very, very sorry that you and so many Mexicans felt offended. That was never our intention. We came from a place of love.”
The film, which received 13 Oscar nominations and won two awards, faced backlash partly due to controversial statements from actress Karla Sofía Gascón. Many felt that the film misrepresented Mexican culture and its people.
Saldaña disagreed with the criticism that the film focused specifically on Mexico. She explained, “For me, the heart of this movie was not Mexico. We were making a film about four women with universal struggles against systemic oppression.” She emphasized that these women could be from anywhere, reflecting a wide range of experiences and backgrounds.
Saldaña is open to conversations about how the film could have been improved. She said, “I’m always open to sit down with all of my Mexican brothers and sisters to have a great conversation about this.”
Reflecting on her personal Journey, Saldaña shared how challenges and setbacks shaped her career. She mentioned the heartbreak of not getting roles she wanted but learned to keep moving forward. “It’s not about the win. When you let that go, you appreciate the journey even more,” she added.
Through her words, Saldaña shows her commitment to understanding and connecting with the Mexican community, inviting dialogue and valuing the stories of diverse women.
