Zohran Mamdani started the new year by becoming New York City’s 112th mayor just as the clock hit midnight on New Year’s Eve. He took his oath of office in a unique private ceremony at the abandoned Old City Hall subway station, administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
At 34, Mamdani is a groundbreaking figure—New York’s first Muslim mayor and the first of South Asian descent. “This is truly the honor and the privilege of a lifetime,” he remarked during his brief speech.
During the ceremony, Mamdani described the old subway station as a “testament to the importance of public transit” in the city. He emphasized this commitment by appointing Mike Flynn as the new Department of Transportation commissioner.
A public swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Thursday afternoon. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders will administer the oath at City Hall, and a celebratory block party will take place in Lower Manhattan. Similarly, former DOT commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan noted that Flynn’s deep understanding of the agency and city’s streets will aid in implementing effective projects.
