Joseph Siaw Agyepong, the Executive Chairman of Jospong Group, recently met with Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir, the Governor of Mombasa, Kenya. They discussed strengthening waste management practices in Africa, particularly in Mombasa, which is Kenya’s second-largest city.
The focus of their talks was a partnership between Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a Jospong subsidiary, and Mombasa. This collaboration aims to address sanitation issues and generate job opportunities for local communities. Agyepong emphasized, “Africa is ready, and Mombasa is a key partner in this transformative agenda.” He believes this partnership isn’t just about business growth; it’s about learning from each other and uplifting local talent.
Governor Nassir welcomed the Jospong delegation. He recognized the impressive track record of Jospong Group across Africa and highlighted the importance of solutions that make an immediate difference while ensuring long-term environmental health.
The partnership promises to stimulate economic growth and foster sustainability in Mombasa. Jospong Group plans to adapt its successful waste management strategies from Ghana to the needs of Kenya.
In Nairobi, Agyepong also met with Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Environment. She conveyed a strong interest in Jospong’s innovative approaches, stressing the role of the private sector in tackling Kenya’s environmental problems. Her ministry is keen on partnerships that promote green growth and a shift toward a circular economy.
Kenya faces significant challenges, with about 95% of its waste going uncollected, according to a 2021 World Bank report. This partnership may help transform how waste is managed in the country. Addressing these issues is crucial, especially as 70% of Africa’s population is projected to live in urban areas by 2050, according to the UN.
The discussions concluded with plans for a follow-up meeting involving Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority. They aim to integrate Jospong’s model into Kenya’s Extended Producer Responsibility framework and broader environmental initiatives.
Jospong Group has already successfully implemented scalable waste management systems in various African countries, promoting job creation and a circular economy. With over 60 subsidiaries, it stands out as a leader in sustainable business practices across the continent.
As communities and governments seek ways to address environmental issues, collaborations like this one are critical. They showcase how shared knowledge and local involvement can lead to effective, long-term solutions.
