Gordon M. Webster, Jr., the publisher of The Business Journal, has received the Leon S. Peters Award from the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, marking him as the 41st recipient of this honor.
The announcement caught Webster by surprise during a Rotary Club meeting in downtown Fresno. After 50 years with his family’s publishing business, this recognition adds to his achievements.
The Leon S. Peters Award commemorates a notable figure from Fresno’s history. Peters, the son of Armenian immigrants, made his mark as a successful businessman and philanthropist after losing his parents early in life. His legacy inspired the creation of this award, focused on honoring leaders who demonstrate compassion and ethics in their professional lives.
Previous winners include notable figures like Robert Smittcamp, John Harris, and Sally Caglia, showcasing a tradition of recognizing impactful leaders in the community.
The Business Journal, where Webster has spent decades, serves Fresno and surrounding counties. Its history dates back to 1886 with the founding of a newspaper detailing real estate transactions. The publication has evolved and grown significantly under Webster’s leadership since he became publisher in 1981.
Webster, who played football at Oregon State University, transformed the Fresno Daily Report into The Business Journal in 1991. His efforts saw circulation grow dramatically, and advertising revenues increased over 1,000% during his tenure.
As a Fresno native, Webster has dedicated himself to community service. He has held leadership roles in various organizations, including the Rotary Club and the Fresno Chamber of Commerce. His family also actively supports charities, reflecting their commitment to giving back.
Looking ahead, Gordon’s daughter, Ashley Webster Rudolph, is poised to continue the family legacy. With 15 years of experience, she understands the business deeply and is ready to lead into the future. She values the lessons she’s learned from her father and is excited to carry the Webster name forward.
The Valley Business Awards, where Webster and other distinguished leaders will be recognized, is set to take place on March 19 at Pardini’s Catering.
