ODU Honors Over 2,700 Graduates at Inspiring 142nd Commencement Ceremony

Old Dominion University celebrated its 142nd Commencement Ceremony on May 10, 2025. This special day welcomed over 2,700 new Monarch alumni. Friends and families filled the campus, cheering for the graduates who reached an important milestone.

At 9:30 a.m., around 2,100 students gathered for the Main Undergraduate Ceremony at Kornblau Field in S.B. Ballard Stadium. Graduates hailed from various schools, including engineering, education, health sciences, business, arts, and cybersecurity.

President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., expressed pride in the graduates: “As you transition from students to alumni, that pride will only grow in the years to come.”

The highlight of the day was the honorary doctorate awarded to actress Meagan Good, who also served as the keynote speaker. In her speech, she shared that growing up in a small California community led her to discover the strength in being different. “The world doesn’t need another copy; it needs the original you,” she said.

Meagan emphasized the importance of embracing uniqueness and viewing challenges as growth opportunities. She advised graduates not to rush through life. Instead, she encouraged them to appreciate the journey, saying, “That is where the magic happens.”

Meagan also reminded the audience that real success comes from lifting others as you climb. Her journey from childhood actress to accomplished producer is filled with lessons that resonate with many. Her insights remind us that perseverance often brings unexpected rewards. According to a 2022 survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, many graduates feel more prepared to face challenges thanks to their educational experiences.

Another prominent figure, The Honorable Don Scott, received an honorary doctorate for his contributions to public service. He made history as Virginia’s first Black Speaker of the House of Delegates. Scott’s leadership highlights his commitment to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. His story serves as an inspiration, showing the power of determination and service.

This year’s ceremony also introduced individual college celebrations, allowing graduates to connect more intimately with peers and faculty. Such personalized experiences enhance the sense of community and shared achievement.

In a separate Advanced Degree Ceremony, Professor John B. Ford urged graduates to be lifelong learners and remain open-minded. He urged them to travel, engage with new cultures, and be humble while collaborating with others. “You represent us,” he noted, encouraging graduates to make an impact in their chosen fields.
