RJ Harvey: A Rising Star for the Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — RJ Harvey began his journey as a quarterback in high school. He started at the University of Virginia, hoping to play the same position in college. However, it didn’t take long for him to realize his future in football lay elsewhere. In 2020, he transitioned to running back at the University of Central Florida (UCF), a move that proved to be a game-changer.

At UCF, Harvey set the school’s all-time touchdown record and led the Big 12 in rushing touchdowns during his final season. Incredibly, he became just the second player in UCF’s history to achieve back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Over the past two years, only three others in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) recorded more rushing yards than him.

Now, as Harvey steps onto the NFL stage with the Denver Broncos, he’s finding his previous experience as a quarterback very useful.

“I feel like playing quarterback has given me an advantage with my vision,” he said. “I know what to expect and can see what the defense is doing.”

This insight aligns with the thoughts of NFL experts, like General Manager George Paton, who commented that Harvey might have the best vision of any running back in this draft. This skill was clear during a recent practice where he also showcased his ability to catch passes out of the backfield—a crucial aspect that can distinguish running backs in the pros.

Head Coach Sean Payton highlighted how different college offenses handle running backs compared to the NFL. “At the NFL level, running backs are often more integrated into the passing game,” he noted. The coaching staff has focused on giving Harvey reps in those scenarios, emphasizing his versatility.

Payton also expressed plans for Harvey to contribute on third downs as well. He believes the young talent can adapt to various blocking needs, although they won’t overload him with blocking duties against bigger defenders. "His stature is put together pretty well,” said Payton. “It’s important to differentiate between a small runner and a shorter one; we prefer the latter."

As the Broncos continue to shape Harvey’s role, he’s already studying film of successful NFL running backs like Darren Sproles and Alvin Kamara. “I definitely want to be like those guys,” he remarked, showing his ambition.

Early indications show that Harvey is picking up the team’s system quickly. "It’s clear this is important to him," Payton added. "We’re pleased with his progress so far.”

For Harvey, joining the Broncos feels like a blessing. “I’m just so happy to be here in Broncos Country," he said. “I can’t wait to showcase my skills.”
