AAAS Introduces Exciting University Memberships to Navigate Science Funding Cuts

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) recently launched an exciting Institutional Membership program. This new initiative welcomes the University of Mississippi and The George Washington University as its first members.

This program allows universities, corporations, and other organizations to engage more deeply with AAAS. Members can showcase their commitment to science and innovation. There are many benefits, including leadership opportunities, professional development resources, and unlimited Elemental Memberships for students, faculty, and staff.

John C. Higginbotham, Vice Chancellor of Research and Economic Development at the University of Mississippi, shared his enthusiasm. "Being the first AAAS Institutional Member is a big step for us. This will help our faculty and graduates expand their networks, which is a win for everyone."

With Elemental Memberships, individuals can take part in AAAS sections, access a wealth of resources focused on public engagement, and qualify for exclusive awards and honors.

The George Washington University celebrated its membership during its annual GW Innovation Fest on May 1. GW Provost Christopher Alan Bracey highlighted the global community’s role in advancing science and innovation. "Joining AAAS connects us to efforts that celebrate scientific excellence and support informed decision-making."

The membership program was created based on feedback from academe. Andrew Black, AAAS Chief of Staff, noted that the aim is to amplify the scientific community’s voice during trying times. "We want to broaden our reach and make our voice stronger and more impactful,” he said.

AAAS leaders emphasize that these new memberships aim to foster collaboration and enhance the visibility of institutions committed to scientific progress. Sudip Parikh, AAAS CEO, echoed this sentiment, saying, "Through our Institutional Membership program, we can unite the community, empower individuals, and expand our collective influence."

This initiative comes at a crucial time when science is often at the forefront of public discussions. According to a recent report from the Pew Research Center, 70% of Americans believe scientific research has a positive impact on society. Strengthening the ties between academia and organizations like AAAS benefits everyone involved in the scientific community.
