Bellaire High School’s Mental Health Awareness Walk
Bellaire High School’s Sources of Strength group is making waves for mental health awareness. They recently organized a walk to shine a light on this important issue.
Dorothy Turner, the school’s Prevention Specialist, shared that this youth-led group meets monthly to promote positivity. They run various campaigns, including their "Steps Against Suicide" in the fall, and have even hosted events like an Easter egg hunt with uplifting messages.
“This is our Mental Health Awareness Week,” said Turner. “We planned this since February. The goal is to spread hope and reduce stigma around mental health.”
Unlike their previous 5K event, this walk was not competitive. “There are no prizes or winners. We’ll wear green to symbolize our support and walk together to share our message,” Turner explained.
The impact of mental health issues is real and urgent. Recent statistics show that 1 in 5 young people experience a mental health challenge. Turner emphasized that there’s support available at the school, highlighting trusted adults and peer leaders ready to help.
Joining the walk were students Graham Campbell and Savannah Kanyuch. Both are passionate about supporting others due to their personal experiences. Kanyuch shared, “My sister struggled deeply with her mental health, which motivated me to help others.” Campbell echoed her sentiment, expressing a desire to improve mental health in their community.
Rebecca DiFabrizio, a Spanish teacher and adult leader in Sources of Strength, highlighted their theme, “Stronger Together.” They organized fun activities like yoga, cornhole, and a ping pong tournament to help students relax and connect.
Through these initiatives, the group aims to foster a community of support and understanding. As mental health conversations grow, it’s crucial to remember that comfort and help are always just around the corner.
