I’ve been in Ottawa for a few weeks now, and it’s been quite the journey! I’m setting up my office as the new Member of Parliament for Kelowna. I’ve hired staff in both Ottawa and back home, and I’m excited to be sworn in officially on Thursday, May 22nd.
Before coming here, I met with the Mayor and city officials to discuss what our community needs from the federal government. We’re keeping in close touch, so I feel confident advocating for those priorities as soon as Parliament begins on May 26th.
We’re almost ready to announce our constituency office’s location in Kelowna. In the meantime, if anyone has questions about federal matters, you can reach out to me at stephen.fuhr@parl.gc.ca.
Something significant is on the horizon: His Majesty King Charles III will give the Speech from the Throne on May 27th. This is historic! It’s been nearly 50 years since a monarch personally opened Parliament in Canada—the last time was Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. I’ll share my thoughts on this event in my next community update.
Recently, I was appointed Secretary of State for Military Procurement by Prime Minister Carney. It’s an honor I gladly accepted! I was sworn into the King’s Privy Council on May 13th, and the experience was unforgettable.
The Secretary of State role hasn’t been active in a while. While it’s not a Cabinet position, it’s linked to the Ministry and the wider government. The office has a bit of history: it was a common role during Jean Chrétien’s time and saw a brief revival under Stephen Harper. Now, Prime Minister Carney is bringing it back, and I’m proud to be a part of this change.
I attended my first Cabinet meeting and am gearing up for a retreat at Meech Lake on May 20th and 21st. If you’re in Ottawa, don’t hesitate to visit my office at 268 Wellington Street. Whether you’re here for business, a school trip, or just visiting, I’d love to connect with you. It’s always great to meet people from Kelowna.
Please feel free to let me know if there’s anything I can assist you with. I’m looking forward to seeing many of you soon, whether in Kelowna or here in Ottawa.
Thank you all for this remarkable opportunity. It’s a privilege to represent our community at this level.
