Graduation day at Elon University was a joyous occasion on May 21, as 85 students celebrated earning their master’s degrees in Alumni Gym. President Connie Book oversaw the ceremony, emphasizing the graduates’ journey ahead.
The graduates hailed from the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business and the Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education, earning degrees in fields like business analytics, accounting, and higher education. Provost Rebecca Kohn welcomed everyone and reminded the graduates that this moment marks a new beginning.
Micaela Acosta, who traveled from Argentina to earn her Master of Education in Innovation, delivered a heartfelt speech. She highlighted that their stories were just beginning and urged her peers to create lives worth sharing. “We stand on a bridge between two worlds,” she said, inspiring her classmates to embrace the future.
Kevin Trapani, a notable figure in the business world and a father of three Elon graduates, spoke next. He emphasized that being part of Elon means being part of a community that values purpose and character. Trapani noted that many today struggle with feelings of isolation and identity. He encouraged graduates to focus on three principles: belief, belonging, and behavior.
“Belief demands presence,” he said, stressing the importance of staying grounded amid distractions. Studies indicate that individuals with strong belief systems often report higher levels of well-being. Trapani urged graduates to use their privilege wisely. “Your privilege is power. Use it to uplift others,” he stated.
At the ceremony’s end, graduates received oak saplings, a memento to remind them of their journey at Elon. President Book encouraged them to uphold the university’s values in their future endeavors. “I charge you to carry Elon and its values always,” she said, closing an inspiring chapter for the graduates.
In today’s world, where graduates face numerous challenges, including mental health issues and societal pressures, the messages of belief and community are more relevant than ever. A recent study by the American Psychological Association found that over 60% of young adults reported feeling isolated. This ceremony served as a reminder that they are not alone and can carry forward the values instilled in them during their time at Elon.
