Pizzolatto explained that he chose to step away from the franchise. “I was spiritually tired of walking in that much darkness,” he reflected. After gaining full custody of his daughter in 2020, he needed to focus on fatherhood. “I had to step away from a lot of work,” he admitted. He felt it was right for HBO to move on without him for the fourth season, and the network is now working on a fifth season with Lopez as showrunner.
