David Ortiz Weighs In on Rafael Devers Drama: ‘The Red Sox Asked for It!’

Rafael Devers has found a strong ally in Boston legend David Ortiz after the young star declined to play first base for the Red Sox. Ortiz stepped up when the team faced a challenge after first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury. Fans hoped Devers would switch from designated hitter (DH) to fill the gap at first base.

“He’s fantastic as the DH. They wanted him to focus there, and he’s doing a great job,” Ortiz told The Associated Press. “When Casas got hurt, people thought, ‘Devers will go to first, and [Masataka] Yoshida will step in as DH, and we’ll be better.’ But it’s not that simple. They asked him to focus on hitting, and changing positions isn’t easy.”

Devers, now in his ninth season with the Red Sox, inked a massive 11-year, $331 million deal at the start of 2023. While he usually played third base, the team emphasized his hitting skills when they signed infielder Alex Bregman. This shift stirred some early-season drama.

Ortiz, who spent 14 seasons with the Red Sox and backed his Hall of Fame career with three World Series titles, knows the dynamics of the team well. He played both DH and first base and understands the importance of letting players concentrate on their strengths.

When Casas got injured, many thought Devers would easily transition to first base. However, Devers clearly articulated, “They can’t expect me to play every position. In spring training, I was told to focus on hitting, not to worry about my glove.” This decision seems to be paying off, with Devers batting .286 and leading the league with 52 RBIs this season.

“We made it clear he should be our DH,” said Ortiz. “He’s fulfilling that role beautifully.”

While Ortiz acknowledges that some flexibility could help the team, he emphasizes that it’s ultimately up to Devers. “If he wants to practice at first base and try it out, that’s on him,” he adds.
