Mahmoud Khalil, a well-known Palestinian activist at Columbia University, was arrested by ICE in his university apartment near the Manhattan campus. His attorney, Amy Greer, reported that federal agents executed a State Department order to revoke Khalil’s student visa.
Greer informed the agents that Khalil is a permanent resident with a green card. They then stated that they would revoke that as well. Columbia University released a statement expressing its commitment to legal obligations and support for its students and community.
Khalil’s arrest follows President Trump’s push to deport foreign students and imprison “agitators” involved in protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza. The Trump administration has also cut about $400 million in federal funding to Columbia University due to alleged violations of anti-discrimination laws.

Mahmoud Khalil is a Palestinian who actively represented pro-Palestinian student protests at Columbia, especially during the Gaza solidarity encampment last spring. He has been featured in various media interviews and is a graduate of the university’s School of International and Public Affairs. Khalil is married, and his wife is expecting a baby. They shared the university-owned apartment where the ICE raid occurred.
