A recent study has revealed that humpback whales are displaying unique behaviors by blowing large bubble rings during friendly interactions with humans. This exciting discovery stems from a collaboration between scientists at the SETI Institute and the University of California at Davis and is documented in the journal Marine Mammal Science.

Whales and Their Playful Side

Humpback whales are already known for their playful nature. They create bubble nets to catch fish and use bubbles in various social interactions. The new observation shows that when these majestic creatures encounter humans, they can blow bubble rings, much like smoke rings made by people.

Dr. Laurance Doyle from the SETI Institute explains that this behavior might indicate the whales’ curiosity towards humans. He noted that if intelligent extraterrestrial life exists, they may also demonstrate behaviors that reveal their interest in us. "Curious behavior in humpback whales supports this idea," he said.

Co-lead researcher Dr. Fred Sharpe mentions that humpback whales live in complex societies and possess diverse communication methods. The bubble rings they produce could be a playful attempt to engage with humans, suggesting that they might be seeking interaction or trying to communicate.

Marine wildlife photographer Jodi Frediani, who also contributed to the study, highlights that the whales’ friendly behavior towards boats and swimmers has been witnessed across global populations. The researchers observed this playful act during encounters with approximately a dozen whales.

The study analyzed twelve episodes involving eleven whales, producing thirty-nine bubble rings in total.
