Why Europe is Eager to Strengthen Ties with India: Insights from EAM Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently spoke to the Indian community in Belgium and Luxembourg, highlighting how India and Europe are strengthening their ties. During his visit to Brussels, he pointed out that Europe is reassessing its dependencies and seeking greater independence, a concept similar to India’s aim for self-reliance, known as Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Jaishankar remarked, “Today, we are witnessing the rise of an ‘Aatmanirbhar Europe.’ Europe is understanding that it needs solutions created from within.” This realization is fostering a deeper interest in forming reliable partnerships, with India positioned as a critical partner.

Amid a shifting global landscape, especially in trade and supply chains, there’s a push within Europe to connect more closely with India. The minister emphasized this need for collaboration, mentioning an increase in economic and political engagements.

He praised the Indian community for its contributions in their new homes, noting that these individuals play a vital role in strengthening India’s presence abroad. “Your diverse backgrounds enrich Belgian society,” he said, reflecting on the historical bond between India and Belgium, which dates back to India’s independence.

Expanding on cooperation, Jaishankar mentioned plans to enhance ties across various sectors. This comes in the wake of a successful visit by a large Belgian economic delegation to India, which explored partnerships in defense, green energy, and more. Princess Astrid led this visit, meeting with key Indian leaders to discuss strategic opportunities.

During his time in Brussels, Jaishankar also held discussions with Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Prevost, focusing on issues like terrorism and mutual challenges. Their meeting underscored the momentum in diplomatic efforts, especially in light of recent global unrest.

As India increases its diplomatic activities across Europe, the aim is to create robust political and economic connections. This approach not only strengthens bilateral relationships but also helps India navigate a complex global environment.

For additional insights, a recent study from the European Council on Foreign Relations showed that 74% of European countries support closer ties with India due to its growing economic power. The sentiment reflects a broader trend where nations are looking for dependable partnerships amid uncertainty.

Overall, Jaishankar’s visit illustrates the evolving dynamics between India and Europe, showcasing a future built on cooperation, trust, and shared goals.
