How Jefferson County Family Resource Center Supports EBT Fraud Victims in Accessing Food Assistance

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Many people in Alabama are facing a tough challenge: their SNAP benefits are being stolen. Criminals have been draining EBT cards, leaving families without the money they need for groceries.

The Jefferson County Family Resource Center has noticed a growing number of clients reporting this issue. Last year, only five clients experienced theft, but this year, that number has jumped to 30%. Programs Manager Chloe Pappa shares that many people don’t realize how serious the situation is. Once someone’s EBT card is emptied, they typically have to wait until the next month to get more funds. Sadly, the Department of Human Resources no longer replaces stolen money.

Some clients have been targeted multiple times, leading to frustration and fear. Pappa notes, “Many clients are scared and anxious about where their next meal will come from, especially parents trying to feed their kids.”

Recently, the Department of Human Resources has made some improvements. SNAP recipients can now lock their cards to help prevent theft. Still, many families are struggling to find assistance.

To help, the Family Resource Center hosts food box distributions twice a month. These events, which are open to anyone in need, provide free boxes of fresh produce, meat, and snacks. Pappa highlights the positive impact of these distributions, saying they don’t just fill stomachs; they also ease minds. “People often share their stories with each other, which brings relief,” she adds.

However, one food box can’t last a family the whole month. Pappa encourages those in need to connect with other resources like the Grace Klein Community and the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. Grace Klein offers a food support drive-thru from Monday to Thursday, while the Food Bank has a food distribution calendar with dates and times for giveaways throughout central Alabama.

As SNAP theft becomes more common, it emphasizes the need for community support and awareness around food security. The resources available can make a difference, but families must remain vigilant. Working together, communities can help ensure that no one goes hungry.
