Protecting Our Children: Mental Health Concerns Rise Amid ICE Raids

CINCINNATI – A local group is raising alarms about children’s mental health as recent ICE arrests surge in Northern Kentucky. NorthKey Community Care supports the community by providing therapy and resources in over 50 schools.

Danielle Amrine and Angela Fox of NorthKey have been working directly with children who have witnessed their parents’ arrests. They find this situation concerning, especially as ICE operations become more visible, even on school grounds.

“It’s crucial to check in on our kids. They see these events unfold on social media,” Amrine says. The emotional toll can be heavy; children are in distress, and their mental well-being is at stake.

Fox shared a troubling incident at one elementary school, where children saw their parents taken away by ICE during drop-off. This kind of trauma can lead to serious anxiety. Amrine mentioned her own daughter experiencing nightmares tied to these events.

To help, both Amrine and Fox emphasize the need for open communication at home. They suggest creating a safe space for children to express their fears. Simple activities like drawing or play therapy can also be beneficial.

Recent statistics reveal a worrying trend: according to a report from the American Psychological Association, nearly 40% of children exposed to immigration enforcement suffer from heightened anxiety and depression. These young minds often don’t possess the tools to process what they see.

On a visit to the area, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine addressed concerns about the ICE raids, saying, “If someone’s committed a significant crime, they need to be removed. But for those who came here as young children, it’s a different case.” His comments highlight the ongoing debate about immigration and its impact on families.
