British diplomat Gareth Weir is set to speak at TEDxSeoul on June 28, focusing on global connections, climate change, and geopolitics. In a recent interview, Weir shared his thoughts on the importance of dialogue in today’s world.

Weir believes TEDx provides a unique platform for sharing ideas. “We’ve teamed up with TEDx before, especially on climate change initiatives,” he said. He sees this collaboration as a way to foster conversations that matter.

As a career diplomat, Weir emphasizes that diplomacy thrives on dialogue. TEDx helps create a safe space for discussions, allowing people to understand different perspectives. He underlined Korea’s impressive growth while highlighting the necessity for adaptability in the face of future challenges. “The miracle on the Han is extraordinary,” he noted, but success will depend on learning to navigate climate issues, technology advancements, and global markets.

Weir also pointed out that TEDx facilitates connections beyond borders. It offers Koreans a chance to share their journey and learn from others worldwide. “There’s a strong desire to learn from Korea and vice versa,” he added.

He sees the partnership between the UK Embassy and TEDx as a way to spark conversations about climate action and human rights, particularly concerning North Korea. The goal is to build shared narratives and collaborate on pressing issues.

In his TEDx talk titled “Crossover,” Weir will discuss the interconnectedness of our world and the shared responsibilities that come with it. Using relatable examples, like smartphones, he’ll illustrate how everything is interlinked and stress the need for unity over division. Both diplomacy and TEDx aim to inspire meaningful change through fresh ideas.

David Choo, the curator of TEDxSeoul, emphasizes that the event serves as a platform for underrepresented voices—like youth, climate activists, and North Korean defectors. He shared plans with the British Embassy for cultural events that focus on literature, film, and environmental storytelling. “It’s about sharing our lives through authentic storytelling,” Choo explained.

This initiative comes at a time when global citizens are increasingly prioritizing engagement across cultures. According to recent statistics, 72% of young people feel it’s essential to learn from other cultures. This sentiment aligns with the TEDx mission of sharing diverse ideas and building global connections.
