Venice 2025 Film Lineup: Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Smashing Machine,’ Julia Roberts & Emma Stone in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘After the Hunt,’ Plus Yorgos Lanthimos’ New Collaboration!

The Venice Film Festival is buzzing with excitement as it prepares for its 82nd edition. The festival, known for showcasing major films ahead of awards season, will kick off from August 27 to September 6. The official lineup will be announced on July 22, and anticipation is already building.

This year, a star-studded cast is set to grace the screens. Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt will star in "The Smashing Machine," a film about heavyweight champion Mark Kerr. Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield team up in the #MeToo-themed thriller "After the Hunt." Emma Stone reunites with director Yorgos Lanthimos for "Bugonia," following their success with "Poor Things."

Angelina Jolie also returns with "Couture," a drama set in the lavish Paris fashion scene. Netflix is expected to contribute significantly this year, featuring George Clooney in the comedy-drama "Jay Kelly" and Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of "Frankenstein," starring Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac.

Kathryn Bigelow’s new film, "A House of Dynamite," is another highly anticipated title. It promises a thrilling plot as a missile is launched at the U.S., sparking a race to identify the culprit.

International films are also in the mix. Pietro Marcello’s biopic "Duse," about Italian diva Eleonora Duse, and Gianfranco Rosi’s intriguing documentary "Below the Clouds" are expected to capture attention. Additionally, Asian representations include "Mother Bhumi," starring Fan Bingbing, and Park Chan-wook’s "No Other Choice."

The festival’s main jury will be led by two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne, adding to the event’s prestige.

Historically, the Venice Film Festival has been a launch pad for films that go on to earn significant accolades. For instance, films like "Birdman," "La La Land," and "The Shape of Water" premiered here before their Academy Award wins. This trend suggests that the upcoming festival could also set the stage for future successes.

As the countdown continues, discussions on social media are already lively, with fans speculating about their favorite stars and films. The excitement surrounding this year’s event seems stronger than ever, promising a slate of memorable cinematic experiences.
