Impact of Proposed Federal Food Benefit Cuts on Los Angeles Residents: What You Need to Know

The proposed Budget Reconciliation Bill, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” by President Trump, is raising concerns in Southern California. It suggests major cuts to federal food assistance programs, especially impacting low-income families.

In California, these cuts would likely affect the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known as CalFresh. If the state can’t compensate for these losses, over a million residents could lose their benefits or see a 25% reduction in daily assistance. Research from the California Budget and Policy Center highlights that the daily benefits are already quite low, averaging about $6 per person.

Monica Saucedo, a senior policy fellow, explained that this amount is barely enough. With rising grocery prices, these benefits provide essential support in family budgets. Approximately 1.5 million people in Los Angeles County depend on CalFresh each month.

According to Itzúl Gutierrez from the California Association of Food Banks, if these cuts happen, food distribution centers may see a significant rise in demand. Gutierrez’s organization notes that SNAP provides nine meals for every one meal a food bank can offer. “Food banks can’t fill that gap,” she said, emphasizing the potential crisis.

These proposed changes represent a significant shift from the fundamental goal of the food assistance program: to prevent hunger in the nation. Cuts to CalFresh are just one element of a larger framework that includes harsh eligibility limits, which could affect hundreds of thousands of families, and stricter rules on immigrant participation.
