The dinosaurs are back, and they’re making quite a splash! Jurassic World Rebirth is set to earn about $28 million on its opening day in the U.S., placing it among the top 20 Wednesday box office openings ever. Over five days, it’s projected to gross around $127.5 million. This strategic release on July 2 aims to make the most of the long Fourth of July weekend. Globally, it’s expected to earn more than $250 million as it debuts in numerous countries.
This film is the seventh in the beloved franchise, produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin and Universal Pictures. It features a fresh cast, including Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey.
So far, Jurassic World Rebirth is exceeding expectations. Directed by Gareth Edwards, known for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the film’s screenplay is penned by David Koepp, who wrote the original Jurassic Park. The story follows an extraction team racing to an island research facility linked to the original park. Unfortunately, the island houses some dangerous creatures left behind.
The movie also stars Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and others. Key producers include Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, with Spielberg as an executive producer.
To put this in context, the previous three Jurassic World films each grossed over $1 billion worldwide. They all opened to higher domestic numbers than Rebirth. Still, this latest installment had a smaller production budget of $225 million. For comparison, the first Jurassic World debuted with an impressive $208.8 million back in 2015, while Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World: Dominion opened at $148 million and $145 million, respectively.
The original Jurassic Park, released in June 1993, made $47 million during its opening weekend—a staggering amount for that time. Spielberg’s active role in Rebirth indicates its significance as it sets the tone for future films in the franchise.
Other big titles to watch this holiday weekend include Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie, which opened to a strong $57 million domestically in its first weekend, showing that racing films can also attract big audiences.
In 2023, cinema is getting a much-needed boost, and the excitement around these big releases suggests audiences are ready for a summer of blockbuster adventures.
