Emmons Appointed Dean of the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences: What This Means for Students and Faculty

Provost James Holloway has appointed Mark Emmons as the new dean of the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences (CULLS) at The University of New Mexico. Emmons begins his new role on August 24 and will serve until January 31, 2027.

He takes over from Leo Lo, who is transitioning to a role as dean of libraries and university librarian at the University of Virginia in mid-September.

Holloway praised Emmons, highlighting his extensive experience and leadership skills. “Mark has been a valuable leader at UNM for many years. I believe he will guide CULLS in exciting new directions and help implement their strategic plan,” he said. Holloway noted Emmons’ deep understanding of academic library issues and his knack for solving problems creatively.

Emmons has been with UNM since 1998, holding various leadership roles along the way. He was interim dean in 2021 prior to Lo’s arrival. His past positions include associate dean for administration and organizational strategy and director of outreach and instruction.

“I’m honored to step into this role,” Emmons said. “I bring a wealth of institutional knowledge and a strong commitment to the mission of CULLS. I look forward to collaborating with our team to support faculty and staff and serve our community better.”

His research interests focus on evaluating academic libraries, their role in student success, and film research resources. He has taught in the Organization, Information and Learning Sciences program, offering classes in qualitative research methods and organizational leadership.

Prior to his academic career, Emmons worked as a bilingual teacher and librarian in Los Angeles, as well as in film production.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and a master’s in library sciences, both from UCLA, along with a doctorate in educational leadership from UNM.
