Breaking News: NFLPA’s Tretter Steps Down as Union Faces Major Overhaul

NFLPA chief strategy officer JC Tretter has announced his resignation and will not seek the interim executive director position at the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). Tretter, 34, cited family pressures as the main reason for stepping down.

He held the chief strategy officer role since October 2024 and previously served as the player president from 2020 to 2024. His resignation comes shortly after Lloyd Howell, the former executive director, stepped down. Tretter expressed that he no longer has anything to contribute and will leave the organization soon.

Tretter faced criticism on social media following his potential candidacy. Former linebacker Will Compton called the NFLPA “the dumbest union in sports,” implying that Tretter’s leadership failed to address serious issues, like owners’ collusion over guaranteed contracts. Ben Watson, a former player and NFLPA executive member, also suggested that Tretter should be removed entirely.

In his time as player president, Tretter was involved in a controversial vote to make the NFLPA’s search for an executive director more confidential. This vote was part of a longer process that selected Howell, whose leadership became questionable amidst allegations of mishandling contracts and financial decisions.

In recent years, the NFLPA has faced significant challenges. In 2022, the union accused NFL owners of collusion to avoid giving out guaranteed contracts. As the NFLPA’s board of player representatives meets to discuss candidates for the interim director, names like Don Davis and Zamir Cobb are among those mentioned. They will also consider how to choose the next executive director, weighing whether the interim director or the executive committee should take the lead.
