Why Moon Studios Suggests ‘No Rest for the Wicked’ Might Bypass Xbox: Insights from Ori Developers | VGC

Moon Studios, the team behind the beloved Ori games, is focusing on bringing their new title, No Rest for the Wicked, to the PS5, PS5 Pro, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. CEO Thomas Mahler recently shared this news on Discord, noting that right now, market conditions mean the Xbox version will be considered later.

In his message, Mahler outlined that currently, they may only release on PS5 and possibly Switch 2. “We need to prioritize the platforms that make the most sense,” he stated. The game is already available in early access on Steam, and the team is eager to get feedback while developing new features, like co-op play.

User reactions on social media have been vocal. A tweet by a user speculated about whether this indicates Xbox is becoming more of a PC-like platform. Mahler took to NeoGaf to address conspiracy theories surrounding the studio’s decisions. “This isn’t a shakedown,” he clarified. “It’s just common sense.”

Mahler explained the studio’s small size and the technical challenges of porting games, which get more complicated with multiple Xbox consoles. “It’s quicker to launch on PS5 first due to fewer technical hurdles,” he mentioned.

Despite these challenges, the studio aims to listen to community requests. “Players really want co-op, and we’re working on that,” Mahler confirmed. He also hopes to release the final version of the game soon, minimizing the complications that come with remaining in early access.

Interestingly, in March, Moon Studios announced they became fully independent after securing the publishing rights to No Rest for the Wicked from Take-Two, their previous publisher.

With gaming trends shifting, it’s clear that many gamers are closely watching platform decisions. Recent data shows a significant uptick in PlayStation users, which might explain the studio’s strategy. As the gaming landscape evolves, choices like these become crucial for developers to stay competitive.
