Exploring India’s River Cruise Boom: A Guide to Unforgettable Journeys on Serene Waters

River cruise tourism in India is on the rise! In recent years, this sector has seen rapid growth, boosted by supportive policies, better infrastructure, and growing interest from global companies. In 2024-25, the number of river cruise voyages on National Waterways jumped to 443, a 19.4% increase from the previous year’s 371.

This surge shows a strong interest in inland water tourism. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is actively promoting river cruises through initiatives like the Cruise Bharat Mission. This ambitious project aims to increase the number of cruise passengers from 0.5 million to 1.5 million by 2027. IWAI plans to develop 51 new river cruise routes across 14 states and 3 union territories, contributing to eco-friendly and culturally rich tourism.

Just a decade ago, river cruising was almost nonexistent. In 2013-14, only five vessels operated on three waterways. Fast forward to 2024-25, and now 25 vessels are exploring 13 national waterways. Key tourist circuits include the Sundarbans in West Bengal, the Brahmaputra in Assam, and Alappuzha in Kerala.

According to a recent survey by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), over 70% of potential tourists expressed interest in river cruises. This reflects a shift in travel preferences, with many seeking unique experiences. Social media buzz around river cruises has also grown, with users sharing stunning images and personal stories, enhancing its appeal.

As river cruise tourism continues to grow, it’s clear that this sector is not just an economic opportunity; it’s also a way to connect with India’s rich culture and natural beauty. The future looks bright for this emerging tourism sector, promising a blend of adventure, relaxation, and discovery.
