Day 1 Highlights from Broncos Camp: Young Receivers Shine as Denver’s Front Seven Dominates

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos are gearing up for a promising season, and the first day of training camp has sparked some excitement.

Young receiver Troy Franklin is back for Year 2. Last season, he caught 28 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns. He quickly made his presence known by sprinting past defenders and catching a deep pass from quarterback Jarrett Stidham. But Franklin isn’t just a deep threat; he also made several solid catches in intermediate routes throughout practice.

Head Coach Sean Payton noted it’s early in camp, but he acknowledged Franklin’s good performance. “He had a good day,” Payton remarked, highlighting Franklin’s potential.

Rookie Pat Bryant joined Franklin as a reliable target during Friday’s practice. Quarterback Bo Nix connected with Bryant on a solid pass despite tight coverage. Known for his dependable hands, Bryant impressed by making several catches in challenging situations.

One practice may not reveal everything, but both players showcased their skills on Day 1, leaving fans optimistic about their contributions this season.

On the defensive side, the Broncos continue to build on last year’s success, when they led the NFL in sacks. Payton pointed out it’s hard to evaluate a pass rush without pads, but the defense demonstrated its strength, applying consistent pressure on the offense. Players like D.J. Jones, Jonathon Cooper, and Nik Bonitto were noted for their aggressive play. Cooper expressed confidence, stating, “I don’t see any reason for us not to be the most dominant unit in the league.”

Nix also showed his ability to avoid sacks, a critical skill for any quarterback. During drills, he escaped quick pressure and gained five yards. This knack for avoiding negative plays could be crucial in tight situations during the season.

Tackle Mike McGlinchey missed practice again, but Payton expects him back soon. Additionally, rookie cornerback Jahdae Barron participated in his first training camp session, focusing on the slot corner position. Payton praised Barron for his intelligence on the field and flexibility to adapt.

The first day of camp had standout moments, like inside linebacker Levelle Bailey’s impressive ball-handling skills that could have led to an interception. Meanwhile, undrafted rookie receiver Jerjuan Newton made an eye-catching catch between two defenders.

Rookie punter Jeremy Crawshaw also delivered an impressive performance, showcasing his ability to kick both deep and accurately. Payton remarked on Crawshaw’s talent, saying, “He certainly has the leg talent.”

As the camp progresses, the Broncos are navigating a blend of young talent and veteran experience. Fans are eager to see how these early performances translate into the regular season.
