Braves Update: Grant Holmes Heads to Injured List with Elbow Tightness – What This Means for the Team

Braves manager Brian Snitker recently shared that pitcher Grant Holmes is experiencing elbow tightness. He left his game against the Rangers after just four innings. Holmes will have his elbow checked to see how serious the issue is, but he’s likely headed for the injured list.

This situation is tough for the Braves, who are already facing challenges with their pitching staff. Holmes will join several other injured players, including Chris Sale, Reynaldo Lopez, Spencer Schwellenbach, and AJ Smith-Shawver. With these absences, Snitker is left with only Spencer Strider, Joey Wentz, and Bryce Elder available as capable starters.

To manage the lack of depth, long reliever Dane Dunning might step in as a starter or pitch in a bullpen game. However, options beyond the current roster are limited. There are some 40-man pitchers like Didier Fuentes, Hurston Waldrep, and Davis Daniel who could make appearances if needed. If the Braves decide to make space on the 40-man roster, they could also consider veterans like Ian Anderson or Jose Suarez.

In a bid to bolster their pitching, the Braves may look for additional arms as the season progresses. Recently DFA’d right-hander Erick Fedde could be an option, but the team probably won’t pursue high-profile talent, especially with their current standings—ten games out of a playoff position and 15 games behind in the NL East.

The outlook isn’t great. Losing Holmes is a significant setback for the Braves. Once a first-round pick by the Dodgers in 2014, Holmes only made his MLB debut last year with Atlanta. He has been a steady contributor with a 3.71 ERA across 179 1/3 innings, including a solid 3.81 ERA as a starter this season.

Experts suggest that elbow issues can often lead to temporary setbacks but may not necessarily indicate serious problems. Historically, many pitchers have returned quickly from similar situations. However, any elbow concern can be nerve-wracking due to the potential for longer recovery times.

As fans await more news on Holmes’s condition, they are left hoping for a quick and smooth recovery. His role is crucial for the team’s success moving forward.
