The Tasallah Foundation has been actively planting trees in northern Nigeria, focusing on the Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Recently, they reached an important milestone by planting over 3,000 trees as part of their ongoing effort to fight environmental degradation.
At the 2025 Annual Tree Planting Campaign, the foundation’s chairman, Malam Usman Ya’u, highlighted the project’s aim: to address serious issues like windstorms, erosion, and the impacts of climate change. This campaign is now in its fourth year and is especially crucial for areas like Darazo, which Ya’u called “one of the most environmentally vulnerable parts” of the state.
He explained that this region has faced a decline in natural vegetation, mostly because of tough climate conditions. “Most of the greenery here comes from human efforts,” he noted, emphasizing that intervention is necessary to combat ongoing desertification.
Malam Ya’u also pointed out the Muhammadu Buhari Bypass community as a particularly hard-hit area suffering from soil erosion and windstorms. The initiative aims to provide long-term protection for such vulnerable communities.
The event also included an awareness session where community leaders and environmental experts discussed the significance of trees. Malam Malami Yakubu, Provost of Darazo College of Education, shared insights about how trees play a vital role in producing oxygen, cleaning the air, conserving biodiversity, and preventing soil erosion.
Alhaji Hassan Tilde, representing the All Progressives Congress in Bauchi State, urged community members to take care of the newly planted trees. He emphasized that nurturing them is essential for the environment and society.
In addition, a recent survey from the Nigerian Environmental Study/Action Team indicates that tree planting can reduce urban temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Celsius. This highlights the importance of community efforts in building greener environments.
The Tasallah Foundation’s message is clear: every resident has a part to play in taking care of these trees. Their preservation is crucial for fostering a resilient environment in Nigeria’s northern regions.
