Tinubu Appoints New Director General to Spearhead Climate Change Council Initiatives

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change. She steps into this role after Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, the Council’s first Director-General, who started in June 2024. Madueke played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the agency.

Majekodunmi is a seasoned expert in climate finance and environmental law, with over 17 years of experience. She previously served as the Financial Adviser to the Council. Her appointment reflects Tinubu’s commitment to addressing climate change, emphasizing its importance not just for the environment, but also for sustainable growth and national security.

The National Council on Climate Change was established under the Climate Change Act of 2021. This body coordinates Nigeria’s climate actions, implements national policies, oversees the carbon budget, and mobilizes green finance.

Climate change impacts everyone. According to a recent report by the World Bank, countries like Nigeria are facing increasing threats from climate hazards, which can disrupt economic stability and affect food security. These issues highlight the urgent need for effective leadership in climate initiatives.
