Reddit has announced it will limit the Internet Archive’s access to its content. This decision comes after concerns that AI companies were improperly using the Archive to scrape vast amounts of Reddit data. Starting today, the Internet Archive, specifically its Wayback Machine, will only be able to archive Reddit’s homepage. It won’t have access to detailed posts, comments, or user profiles.
According to Reddit’s spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt, the site supports the Internet Archive’s mission to maintain a digital library. However, they believe that not all Reddit content should be preserved that way. Rathschmidt stated that to protect user privacy and comply with platform rules, Reddit had to take this step.
This isn’t Reddit’s first action against data scraping. In the past year, the platform has restricted access to its data to prevent misuse by AI companies. They reached a deal with Google for AI training data but began blocking search engines from crawling their content without payment. Reddit also modified its API rules, which resulted in some third-party apps shutting down amid protests from users.
Despite these measures, Reddit established an AI relationship with OpenAI but has ongoing legal disputes with Anthropic for alleged scraping of content.
