Exciting food and drink events are happening this week in Santa Cruz County. Here’s a glimpse of what’s on offer.
One highlight is the 17th annual Testicle Festival at Estrada Deer Camp in Watsonville, happening Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. This event not only supports the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau Young Farmers & Ranchers, but also offers all-you-can-eat fried bulls testicles—often referred to in colorful ways like “Rocky Mountain oysters.” I tried them a couple of years ago, and they surprisingly taste more like calamari than chicken.
This Sunday, The Penny Ice Creamery is marking its 15th birthday with a fun Hoops and Scoops celebration. From 1 to 5 p.m. at their Cedar Street location, you can show off your hula hoop skills and enjoy live DJ music. There’s a space for younger kids too. Bring your own hula hoop, and you’ll get free marshmallow fluff!
Local food and drink events this week include:
Friday, Aug. 22: Check local listings for surprises!
Saturday, Aug. 23: Join in the fun at the Testicle Festival.
Sunday, Aug. 24: Celebrate at The Penny Ice Creamery.
Tuesday, Aug. 26: Another chance to explore local flavors.
Thursday, Aug. 28: End the week with a tasty outing.
Events like these show the vibrant food culture in Santa Cruz, where community ties and local agriculture shine. As food trends evolve, it’s refreshing to see how these festivals celebrate tradition while bringing fun and flavor to the table.
