LAREDO, Tex. — Big changes are coming to restaurant regulations in Texas thanks to Senate Bill 1008. This law aims to make things clearer for restaurant owners and is supervised by around 200 health departments across the state.
Lucio Morales, who runs Rincon Oaxaqueño in Laredo, has been in business for four years. He recently attended a meeting to learn about these new rules and is concerned about potential increases in permit fees. “The prices seem a little drastic, but we’ll see where we fit,” he shared.
Morales isn’t alone. Many restaurant owners in Laredo came together to discuss the changes with the Laredo Public Health Department. “Now we’re aware of what we need to do to avoid making mistakes,” he added.
One key point of the new bill is that restaurants with a valid health permit won’t need additional permits. Also, they won’t face duplicate fees when operating in multiple areas.
Andrea Llano, the Director of Operations for McDonald’s, believes these changes are great for multi-location owners. “It will standardize the process, making compliance easier,” she said.
Gilbert Garcia from the health department explained that the new permit fees will be based on a restaurant’s annual food sales. There are three tiers: Tier one is for sales between $0 and $49,999, tier two for $50,000 to $149,999, and tier three for over $150,000. If a restaurant can’t provide its sales figures, a $150 inspection fee will apply.
The goal of these changes is to streamline the permit process statewide. A recent survey indicated that restaurant owners often feel overwhelmed by varying regulations. This law could help ease that burden and promote a safer dining environment.
