BRYAN, Texas – Big changes are coming to the University of Houston-Victoria. Starting this school year, it will be part of the Texas A&M University System and will officially become Texas A&M-Victoria on September 1st.
State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, who sponsored the bill for this change, shared that this move aims to foster future growth for the campus. She believes Texas A&M’s offerings match well with the needs of students in Victoria and the wider Crossroads region. “We have nuclear energy developing in that area,” she noted. “The region has many industries, making Texas A&M the perfect fit.”
Recently, Kolkhorst has been active in addressing safety concerns, particularly in light of recent floods. She attended a committee hearing that focused on the tragic loss of children during the July 4th floods at Camp Mystic. In response, the Texas Senate has passed the Heaven’s 27 Camp Safety Act. This law aims to make camps safer by enforcing clear guidelines for flood warnings. According to Kolkhorst, camps will now be required to move children to higher ground whenever there’s a flood warning.
The act also introduces stricter rules regarding where sleeping quarters can be located and mandates evacuation plans. These steps aim to streamline safety measures for camps in flood-prone areas, helping to prevent future tragedies.
With these initiatives, Texas A&M-Victoria is poised to grow and become a vital resource for students and the community in the years to come.
