New Halifax County Food Trailer Launches to Fight Hunger and Nourish the Community

HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. — Feed Halifax is making strides to help those facing food insecurity with a newly launched food trailer. This initiative aims to reach more people in Halifax County, where 51% of residents are eligible for food services.

Despite having six food pantries, many still struggle to access meals. Ryland Clark recognized this problem and proposed a solution. “We realized that people needed help, but some couldn’t get to the pantries. A mobile option was essential,” he shared.

With that insight, the idea for a food trailer began to take shape, thanks to funding and support from the Triangle Fire Department. The goal is simple: bring food to those who lack transportation.

The community gathered at the Triangle Fire Department for a Family Fun Day to unveil the food trailer. “It’s amazing to see everyone come together for such a vital cause,” said Nicole Dockery, Vice President and lead nurse at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital. “There’s a real need in our area, and helping out feels wonderful.”

Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, Factory Street Brewing, Hitachi Energy, and the Halifax County Board of Supervisors funded this project, along with donations from their annual Turkey Trot event.

The plan is for the food trailer to travel to various locations in Halifax County where food is needed most. “We’re now looking for drivers and support to get it on the road,” said Debbie Griles, President of Feed Halifax.

Across the country, food insecurity remains a pressing issue. A recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture states that approximately 10.5% of households are food insecure, highlighting the importance of community efforts like these. Mobile food pantries have proven effective in various regions, often increasing access significantly.

This new food trailer is a crucial step towards providing meals to those who might otherwise go without. Community engagement and collaboration are essential, and everyone can play a role in helping their neighbors.
