Pace University’s Sands College of Performing Arts just welcomed three talented new faculty members: L Morgan Lee, Shonica Gooden, and Matthew Stern. These Broadway veterans will share their expertise as clinical assistant professors, focusing on musical theatre, commercial dance, and stage management.
Dean Jennifer Holmes expressed excitement about their arrival, saying, “These extraordinary educators bring unparalleled professional experience and a passion for nurturing emerging talent.” Their addition comes just as the school prepares to unveil a new performing arts center next fall.
L Morgan Lee, a Tony nominee for her role in A Strange Loop, has a diverse background that includes acting in projects like The Danish Girl and directing concerts. Her upcoming event, Beyond the Binary, will take place on October 20 at Carnegie Hall.
Shonica Gooden has also made her mark on Broadway with impressive credits including Hamilton and Cats.
Matthew Stern, known for his extensive stage management work on shows like Wicked and Death of a Salesman, will lead the stage management program at Sands.
This shift in faculty could greatly enrich students’ experiences. According to a recent survey from the National Association of Schools of Theatre, students who learn from industry professionals feel better prepared for their careers. Rigorous training under experienced mentors can provide essential networking opportunities and insider knowledge.
The performing arts landscape is changing rapidly. With a growing emphasis on inclusivity and diverse narratives, having educators like Lee, Gooden, and Stern can help cultivate a fresh wave of talent. As they transition from performing to teaching, their real-world insights will be invaluable for students striving to break into the industry.
