IRVINE, Calif. — The ReadyDetect Competition has launched, offering a remarkable $10 million to boost affordable and effective diagnostic testing. This initiative, organized by University Lab Partners (ULP) with BARDA, invites researchers and innovators to create high-performance antigen tests for important pathogens.
The competition consists of two main stages aimed at developing tests that can be used in various settings—from homes to rural clinics. Current diagnostic methods, especially lateral flow tests, often lack the sensitivity and accuracy of lab tests like PCR. ReadyDetect aims to bridge this gap by promoting accessible, high-quality solutions for public health emergencies.
Why This Matters
As the world has seen during recent health crises, centralized lab access can be limited. Quick and accurate diagnostic tools can help detect diseases early, making a significant impact on response times during outbreaks like pandemic influenza. A study by the National Institutes of Health indicates that rapid testing can reduce spread and improve management of infectious diseases.
The Competition Breakdown
ReadyDetect features two funding phases:
- **Concept Stage (2025–2026):** Up to 10 winners will receive $100,000 each for innovative proposals.
- **Prototype Stage (2026–2028):** Up to 3 winners can earn $3 million for developing successful prototypes that demonstrate efficacy and affordability.
The initial winners are expected to be announced in Spring 2026.
