Badgers Athletic Director Supports Team Amid Rising ‘Fire Fickell’ Chants: What This Means for the Season

Wisconsin’s athletic director, Chris McIntosh, showed his faith in football coach Luke Fickell after the Badgers’ tough 27-10 loss to Maryland, during which fans voiced their frustrations with chants of “Fire Fickell!” Despite this, McIntosh expressed strong support for both Fickell and the team.

In an interview with the Wisconsin State Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, McIntosh emphasized his belief in Fickell and the players, stating, “This is a time for our people to come together.” Fickell’s record as the Badgers’ head coach is now 15-15, and he is under contract until 2031, earning $7.7 million this season.

The Badgers struggled significantly during the game, trailing 20-0 at halftime and only scoring in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. This performance sparked concern among fans, who showed their disappointment as the team headed into the locker room.

McIntosh has faced similar challenges before; he fired coach Paul Chryst midway through the 2022 season and brought Fickell on board, who previously led Cincinnati to the College Football Playoff. Although Fickell had no prior ties to Wisconsin, his hiring was initially met with enthusiasm.

In his tenure, Fickell has dealt with several quarterback injuries, and the team may miss bowl games in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1985-1992. His overall record as a head coach is 78-40.

Listening to fan concerns, McIntosh stated he welcomes their passion. He believes apathy would be worse than criticism, noting, “We’re far from that.” Moreover, McIntosh remains unconcerned about his own job security, as he is contracted through June 2029.
