COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Hawai’i men’s golf team showed improvement during the second round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. They scored 1-over 289, trimming three shots from their first round score. However, they fell two spots to tie for 12th place with a total of 581, trailing Gonzaga (565), Idaho (566), and UC San Diego (566).
Anson Cabello led the team with a strong performance, shooting 2-under 70. He currently stands tied for 19th place at 2-under 144. James Whitworth shot 75, now at 2-over 146 and tied for 43rd, sharing that spot with teammate Dane Watanabe, who carded a 1-under 71.
Also competing for UH are Nathan Szpakowicz, who is tied for 56th with a score of 147, and Chris Salem, sitting in 90th at 151.
In an impressive display, Utah Valley’s Paxton Maxwell shot a 5-under 67, taking the lead at 9-under 135, ahead of UC San Diego’s Davis McDowell by two strokes.
The final round is set for Monday, where UH will compete alongside Weber State, San Jose State, and UC Davis, teeing off from hole No. 10 beginning at 8:20 a.m.
In a separate tournament, Alec Hilgers shot 1-over 73, placing him tied for 30th at 5-over 149. Teammates Quinn Murray and Cameron Combado scored 79, finishing at 151 and 154, respectively.
