NORMAL, Ill. – Wenkers Wright, a senior running back at Illinois State, is among 177 semifinalists for the 2025 William V. Campbell Trophy®, recognized as college football’s top scholar-athlete award. This announcement was made by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame.
These semifinalists average an impressive GPA of 3.60, with many already holding bachelor’s degrees. Celebrating its 36th year, the Campbell Trophy honors athletes who excel in academics, athletics, and leadership. NFF Chairman Archie Manning stated, “This year’s semifinalists exemplify the best of college football. They shine in the classroom and on the field, showing outstanding leadership in their communities. The Campbell Trophy highlights how football fosters well-rounded individuals.”
To be nominated, candidates must be seniors completing their eligibility in 2025 or graduate students who have finished their degrees. They need a GPA of at least 3.2, be first-team players, and demonstrate leadership and citizenship.
Wright earned his bachelor’s degree in just three years with a GPA of 3.32 in business administration and is currently pursuing his MBA with a GPA of 3.75. He has received multiple academic honors, including a spot on the Missouri Valley Football Conference honor roll and the 2023 Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award.
On the field, Wright is a standout player. He was named to the 2025 Preseason All-America team and is a candidate for the Walter Payton Award. In 2024, he became the first Redbird since 2019 to rush for over 1,000 yards. This season, he has already rushed for 309 yards on 51 attempts, scoring four touchdowns, ranking in the top 20 in the FCS.
Wright is also dedicated to his community. He volunteers with Special Olympics Illinois and various local initiatives, including the NEXGEN Leadership program. He even donates earnings from his Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals to support an orphanage in Haiti, where he was adopted from.
The finalists will be announced on October 22. Each will receive an $18,000 scholarship and the chance to be honored at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner in Las Vegas. The highly prestigious Campbell Trophy winner will receive a scholarship boosted to $25,000.
Wright’s journey is a testament to hard work and dedication, both in academics and athletics, paving the way for his future. He aims to join the ranks of past Redbirds finalists like Jeff Hembrough, Dan Hackman, Adam Waugh, and Drew Himmelman.
